President of the International Inclusive Taekwon-Do Association (IITA)

From a humble beginning as a 15-year-old teaching the special needs unit at his high school in Havelock North, New Zealand, Ben Evans has gone on to become one of the most passionate and tireless advocates for Inclusive Taekwon-Do in the world. Today, he proudly serves as the President and Founder of the International Inclusive Taekwon-Do Association (IITA) — a global movement dedicated to creating meaningful opportunities in Taekwon-Do for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities.

A Lifelong Commitment to Inclusion

Ben’s journey in Taekwon-Do began at the age of 7 in the UK. After moving to New Zealand at 14, he continued his training and achieved his 1st Dan by 15. That same year, an opportunity arose that would change the course of his life: teaching Taekwon-Do to the students in his high school’s special needs unit. Inspired and mentored by the highly respected Bethany Hocquard (with over 40 years’ experience in special education), Ben found his calling.

“I had no family connection to disability,” Ben shares, “but something sparked. It started as a small seed and just grew. I never imagined back then that I’d one day be President of an international movement.”

The Birth of IITA

While the early work began in the 2000s under the original name Special Needs Taekwon-Do International (SNTI), it wasn’t until after 2019 that the vision evolved into what is now known as IITA – the International Inclusive Taekwon-Do Association. The change of name reflected not only a more modern and respectful terminology but a broader mission — one that embraced diversity and focused on ability over limitation.

New Zealand has been at the forefront of this movement. Under Ben’s leadership, the country has developed a robust, full-time program that integrates inclusive classes into schools, hosts major events, and continually connects with local and international bodies to strengthen the quality and reach of its work.

A Personal Mission

“I’ve had to fight hard in the mainstream world of Taekwon-Do,” Ben admits. “There are still instructors out there with no empathy for people with disabilities. I’ve heard them say students shouldn’t be graded or compete just because of their limitations. But I feel differently. These students work just as hard — if not harder. Even if they don’t meet mainstream standards, they demonstrate strength in other ways.”

Ben’s passion has led to countless inspiring moments, but one that stands out is New Zealand’s very first inclusive Taekwon-Do competition in 2009–2010, which was covered by TVNZ. The national coverage helped bring visibility to his work and encouraged others to take notice of what Inclusive Taekwon-Do could achieve.

Diversity and Dedication

Ben teaches students of all types of physical and intellectual disabilities — there’s no limit to who he welcomes into the dojang. “Nothing surprises me anymore. What matters is the attitude and spirit. And my students have plenty of both.”

Whether it’s breaking boards, mastering a pattern, or just showing up week after week with determination, the growth he sees in his students continues to fuel his drive.

Looking Forward

New Zealand continues to lead by example. With inclusive programs embedded into school systems, regular events, and a full-time commitment to teaching and outreach, it’s clear that Ben and his team are building something special. “We’re doing everything we can to keep pushing forward. And we’re always looking for more people to get involved.”

Ben’s short- and long-term goals for the region include broader recognition, deeper partnerships, and continued development of athletes from all backgrounds. He envisions more international exposure, better support systems, and one day — a global shift in how disability is viewed in martial arts.

The Power of Global Unity

Ben credits much of the growth and support of his work to the backing of the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), including President Prof. GM Ri Yong Son, Master Kim Cholgyu, and Mr. Anton Arkhipov. Their continued support gives IITA international recognition and a platform to keep expanding.

A Final Message

“To all IITA countries and instructors — the time is now,” Ben says passionately. “More athletes with disabilities are waiting for a place to belong. Taekwon-Do breaks the impossible. Let’s work together to make sure no one is left out. We are today’s leaders and tomorrow’s mentors. Let’s be the example and grow this movement with unity, purpose, and compassion.”
