Meet Kathleen Flanagan, our proud representative of Inclusive Taekwon-Do in Ireland. Based in Cork, Kathleen leads two Taekwon-Do schools—one in Mallow and the other in Aghabullogue. Her journey in Taekwon-Do is a testament to dedication, family, and a deeply rooted passion for inclusion.
Unlike many who begin their Taekwon-Do journey as children, Kathleen entered the world of Taekwon-Do later in life—as a parent of three exceptional children who all rose to become national, European, and world champions. Inspired by their success, she carved her own path, not only as a practitioner but as a leader devoted to inclusivity within Taekwon-Do.
Outside of her schools, Kathleen has worked for over 24 years as the manager of her local community preschool. Her extensive background in early childhood education includes a wide array of specialized courses, particularly those focused on supporting children with additional needs. This professional foundation has significantly shaped her approach to teaching—bringing patience, compassion, and adaptability into every Taekwon-Do class.
“In my schools,” Kathleen says, “everyone trains together as equals.” Her commitment to inclusion isn’t an extra feature—it’s the core of what she does. From the shyest beginner to the most experienced student, every individual is seen, supported, and celebrated.
Kathleen recalls one particularly touching story of a young girl with autism who felt overwhelmed by the idea of grading. Instead of pressuring her, Kathleen arranged for the grading to happen during class without the student even realizing it. “When she was told afterward,” Kathleen shares, “the happiness on her face was unforgettable.” That moment marked a powerful turning point—her confidence soared, and she now proudly participates in both classes and gradings.
Kathleen ensures that inclusiveness is highlighted at every Taekwon-Do competition she organizes. “The smiles on the children’s faces when they receive a medal say it all,” she explains. These events aren’t about ability—they’re about opportunity, recognition, and joy.
Having known IITA President Ben Evans for many years, Kathleen has long admired his work and shares in his vision for a more inclusive future for Taekwon-Do. “The IITA has given children opportunities to compete and gain recognition—even online,” she says. “This is vital for their confidence and self-esteem.”
Her message to instructors and countries around the world is simple but powerful:
“Include all children. The rewards are life-changing. They deserve a chance to belong, to be supported, and to grow within this global family of Inclusive Taekwon-Do.”
Kathleen Flanagan continues to be a shining example of what it means to lead with heart, and the IITA is honored to have her as our Irish representative.
