In the northern heart of Europe, where inclusion and perseverance meet on the mats, stands a man who embodies the spirit of true Taekwon-Do – Grand Master Ivan Tzatchev, 9th Dan GTF and the proud representative of the International Inclusive Taekwon-Do Association (IITA) in Norway.
A Journey That Began with Courage
Norway officially became part of the IITA family in 2018, and it was through the organization’s global activities that Grand Master Ivan discovered a new world of purpose within Taekwon-Do. While Inclusive Taekwon-Do is still growing in awareness across Norway, Ivan’s vision has been clear from the beginning: connection, inclusion, and making space for everyone to grow.
Teaching Beyond Limitations
In his classes, Grand Master Ivan works with a wide range of students—children, teens, and adults—across all abilities. His inclusive approach has welcomed students with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy (CP), Autism, and ADHD. Each individual is treated with the same discipline, encouragement, and expectation to strive towards their best.
But perhaps the most inspiring chapter began with a boy named Ahmed.
Ahmed was 14 years old when he and his mother walked into Ivan’s class. “Hi, this is my son Ahmed, and you are going to be his trainer,” his mother declared. Surprised and unprepared for such a bold introduction, Ivan accepted the challenge. That night, he researched everything he could about Down Syndrome, consulted with friends and professionals, and faced skepticism from many who doubted Ahmed could progress beyond a yellow belt.
But Ivan believed otherwise. “I know I’m crazy,” he said, “but I’ll prove that the impossible can become possible.”
And he did. Ahmed not only earned his Black Belt, but also represented Norway at the IITA World Championships, becoming the first person with Down Syndrome in Norway to achieve this level in Taekwon-Do. His journey became a symbol of hope, pride, and transformation—for his mother, his peers, and his dedicated trainer.
Inclusion in Norway: A Mixed Picture
While Norway is known for its structured and well-funded systems, Grand Master Ivan notes that most inclusive support is centered around the capital, often leaving the northern regions overlooked. Government programs do exist to support children of all abilities, but there’s still work to be done in creating consistent, widespread access to Inclusive Taekwon-Do.
His goal for the future is simple yet powerful: to raise IITA’s profile in Norway and the surrounding regions—and to bring more people into the inclusive Taekwon-Do brotherhood.
International Inspiration and IITA’s Impact
For Ivan, being part of IITA has been more than just an affiliation; it’s been a source of renewed motivation. Seeing dedicated athletes from around the world push past barriers and stand with pride on the world stage fuels his commitment to keep building the inclusive movement at home.
A Message to the World
To his fellow IITA instructors and countries, Grand Master Ivan shares these heartfelt words:
