Mr. Vitaly Gorbatikov: Championing Inclusive Taekwon-Do in Russia and Beyond

In the ever-growing movement of Inclusive Taekwon-Do, few names shine as brightly as Mr. Vitaly Gorbatikov of Russia. Serving as both the Inclusive Taekwon-Do Representative for his nation and the Secretary of the International Inclusive Taekwon-Do Association (IITA), Mr. Gorbatikov brings passion, vision, and tireless dedication to the global stage.

A Pioneer in Russia’s Inclusive Journey

Russia officially joined the IITA in 2023, marking the beginning of a new chapter in inclusive sport. With Mr. Gorbatikov at the forefront, the Russian ITF community began organizing legally recognized inclusive divisions—laying the groundwork for sustainable, impactful change. This step was not merely administrative; it was a declaration that Taekwon-Do is, indeed, for everyone.

A Teacher Inspired by Transformation

Mr. Gorbatikov has worked closely with students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and proudly shares that his student was the first in Russia with this diagnosis to earn a black belt. It is through stories like this that the power of Inclusive Taekwon-Do is truly understood—not just as a sport, but as a life-changing journey.

One of his most treasured memories is of that same student achieving gold at the IITA Online World Championships. Upon returning home, the young champion led a “Lesson with a Champion” at his school—radiating confidence, guiding peers through warm-ups, and showing his medals with pride. In that moment, he became more than a winner; he became a role model, embodying the transformative spirit of Taekwon-Do.

National Progress and Bold Goals

Russia now hosts up to four inclusive championships annually and operates a dedicated coach training school for inclusive instruction. But for Mr. Gorbatikov, this is just the beginning. His current mission is to gain official recognition for Inclusive Taekwon-Do as a sport under Russia’s Ministry of Sports. With such recognition would come vital financial support for athletes, ensuring greater accessibility. His vision also includes eliminating financial barriers altogether by making grading and annual fees free of charge for inclusive students.

Global Inspiration through IITA

Being a key figure within the IITA has deeply enriched Mr. Gorbatikov’s journey. “Belonging to a global organization ignites a shared passion,” he explains. “Some are drawn to collective wisdom; others are inspired by the thrill of competing on the world’s stage.” The upcoming 2025 IITA World Championships in Jesolo, Italy, is not just a competition—it is, in his words, a beacon of progress that unites dreamers and achievers from every corner of the world.

Innovative Approaches in Russia

Russia’s delivery of Inclusive Taekwon-Do is uniquely tailored, integrating therapeutic approaches such as visual cue systems, neuro-gymnastics, and even pool sessions in special schools. These strategies reflect a holistic understanding of the diverse needs of students and a commitment to helping every individual thrive.

A Message to the World

Mr. Gorbatikov offers a heartfelt message to IITA nations and instructors worldwide:

“I am deeply inspired by the vision of uniting people across the world in pursuit of a noble purpose. As Gen. Choi Hong Hi proclaimed, ‘Taekwon-Do is for everyone’. This timeless ideal resonates now more than ever. It would be my greatest honor if, together, we could uphold the essence of inclusive Taekwon-Do while remaining steadfast to the original ITF techniques and disciplines—preserving not only their form but their spirit. For in this balance, we find both progress and tradition; accessibility and excellence.”

Mr. Vitaly Gorbatikov is more than a national representative—he is a guardian of values, a builder of opportunity, and a guiding light for the future of Inclusive Taekwon-Do worldwide.
